Staging an engagement photo session in DC is quite the statement, and with so many iconic backdrops, planning it is a lot of fun! There’s such a variety of locations to really bring out your character, especially if you opt for a documentary-style shoot. Knowing where to start can be a bit overwhelming, though – so let me talk you through some of my favorite spots, from the classic to the quirky!
One great thing about a DC engagement photo session is that you can cover a lot of ground. The key sights are clustered together – and if you want to travel a little further it’s so easy to get around on the Metro – or have some fun with a scooter!
When it comes to romance, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of lighting! This is particularly true for engagement photos in Washington DC, thanks to the sun bouncing off the stark white walls, ivory-hued stone and glossy marble.
Rather than dazzling glare, we’re after the “golden hour” – that magical moment after sunrise and before sunset, to reflect a warm light for a glowing complexion.
Morning is typically preferred: a top tip for any DC engagement photography session is to schedule it super early so that you arrive before the crowds – and the heat, if planning a summer shoot!
DC is a year-round destination, as spring fills the trees with fresh green leaves and blossoms. In fall, the fiery foliage can add some drama to your photos – especially if you’re kicking around in the fallen leaves!
And the clear winter light can be lovely, if you can brave the chill. You might even get a fairytale sprinkling of Christmas lights – but do avoid big public holidays at any time of year.
Sometimes the obvious choices are the best: few places are more instantly recognizable than Capitol Hill. The dome of the Capitol looms in the background, surrounded by abundant tree-lined boulevards, sweeping staircases and fountains.
The neighboring Library of Congress may be less familiar, but European-style architecture gives a wonderful traditional feel to photos. The National Mall sweeps across to the Washington Monument, while the columns of the nearby Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial inspire some cool, creative compositions.
As a photographer, I love working with newly engaged couples in the National Gallery of Art and the National Portrait Gallery. As you kiss in the Sculpture Garden or pose in front of the glass pyramids, it feels like you’re crafting your own original artworks, to be immortalized in your album!
You don’t need a permit for photoshoots here, but you’ll need to do a bit of planning to make the most of the session. Tour the museum ahead of time and note the rooms, spaces and artworks that catch your eye – don’t forget the light-filled atriums, courtyards, and stairwells.
Remember that flash photography may not be allowed, and there may be restrictions on props such as flowers. The great thing is that galleries and museums are year-round venues, so pick the date that suits you best – and dress however you desire!
DC may be a big city, but head to the waterfront and you’ll get a fabulous sense of space. The mile-long Wharf has all the water features you want – with boardwalks, boats and brooding sunsets over the Potomac.
Hop over to the Tidal Basin for panoramic monument views – although it may be more famed for its soft pink cherry blossom, which merits its own festival. DC is scattered with reflecting pools, and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in particular is a really great spot for couples photoshoots as it mirrors the pink morning sky.
For a waterside shoot with a very different feel, we can stroll along Georgetown Canal, with its distinctive bridges, quirky cottages and tree-shaded towpaths. It’s well worth stepping back from the canal, too, as Georgetown’s side streets are right out of a classic movie.
Engagement sessions here can adopt all kinds of themes – from romantic, to cute, to vintage, as you stroll along the cobblestone sidewalks and into neighborhood bakeries and coffee shops.
Love DC but want a nature vibe? Head to the National Arboretum! You’ll need to arrange a photography permit, but it’s worth it to take in the azalea blossoms, bonsais and surreal Capitol Columns.
Another favorite spot outside the city center is the National Cathedral – the pale stone, soaring arches and contemporary stained glass make it one of the most romantic stages for a DC engagement photo shoot – and might even hint at the wedding ceremony to come.
DC has a variety of quirky, classic and iconic locations; if any of these sound tempting, get in touch and we can chat! I’d love to be your DC engagement photographer and to help you find the places that truly tell the story of you as a couple. Drop me a message and we can start planning!
